Mixed-race rockers Herbs spearhead a new music that boasts a potent Pacific identity, including a protest about French nuclear testing, Auckland's North Shore spawns a new pop phenomenon, New Zealand’s most enduring act Split Enz comes to an end, independent record company Flying Nun spreads its wings to the US and UK, and a ground-breaking song that combines Māori kapa haka with hip hop becomes a number one hit.
