In the summer of 1979, a hippie festival at Waihi drew a crowd of 60,000. The festival, Nambassa, was three days of non-stop performance from 28 bands – including Split Enz – and dozens of solo artists, poets, puppeteers, magicians, dancers, actors, as well as political, social and environmental displays and workshops.

More than thirty-six hours of film were recorded during the festival, edited into a documentary which screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980, and had its NZ premiere in July 1980 at the Auckland International Film Festival.

The Nambassa festivals ran each summer from 1976 to 1981 on various farms around Waihi.
