Individual Clinical Training

Our Goal – To meet MAP’s mission to expand access to high quality reproductive health training and services, the clinical training program’s strategic direction is to train a diverse array of anti-racist health care professionals who are highly motivated to provide comprehensive reproductive health care in their future practice to under-served patient populations, but who lack access to the clinical training to do so.

How it Works – MAP receives applications from individual students, residents, physicians, and advanced practice clinicians in need of training. We learn about the individual, their professional goals, training needs, and desired training location.  If accepted, MAP pairs trainees with a reproductive health provider within MAP’s network of training sites throughout the region. The average training rotation length is 2-4 weeks, depending on the professional goals of each learner. MAP coordinates the scheduling, licensing, and most of the administrative requirements of each rotation. Trainees must provide proof of active medical malpractice coverage for hands-on training, and most carry medical malpractice coverage from their institution of origin.

Training Topics – Clinical training topics may include: sexual health history taking, informed consent, contraception, patient-centered contraception counseling, contraception device insertion and removal, comprehensive patient-centered pregnancy options counseling, ultrasound, abortion care, management of pregnancy loss, first trimester bleeding, and ectopic pregnancy. Rotations in telehealth and mobile unit care are available.

Important Caveats – Please note that MAP can only offer training that falls within the trainee’s healthcare profession’s scope of practice in the state where they train. Prior to applying, MAP encourages applicants to refer to the professional scope of practice act in the state where you intend to train and/or practice to learn which procedures you have the authority to practice.  It is also important to understand that the national clinical training landscape is dynamic and under pressure to meet the demands of patients traveling long distances for care. Willingness to travel for clinical training is extremely helpful, but MAP cannot forecast which slots or locations will be available months in advance. We use the completed applications to consider an array of factors that help us match accepted learners with our training partners.

The Process

MAP accepts clinical training applications in several cycles throughout the calendar year. Applications are completed through a secure online platform.  This cycle, applicants will be notified approximately 4 weeks after the deadline whether they have received a training slot. Applicants are encouraged to apply 4 – 6 months in advance of when they want to train.  MAP will make every effort to accommodate accepted applicants who have applied outside of that time frame, depending on slot availability.

to apply for training

MAP’s application for clinical training must be completed through a secure online platform and will require approximately 45 minutes to complete.  MAP encourages applicants to download and review the application guide prior to beginning the application. The application is closed.
